At the impressive Rietveld’s Universe Exhibit in Utrecht (2010), Andrew picked up a copy of How-to construct Rietveld Furniture in the gift shop. A year later, we decided to construct the Red Blue chair with some recently acquired fine lumber from Charlottesville, VA. We used a combination of non-wormy Chestnut for the seat and relatively newer wormy Chestnut for the frame.
The non-wormy Chestnut came from a family friend and was at least 100 years old as the Chestnut Blight was in 1904. We could not bring ourselves to paint the chair in the De Stilj colors as the iconic Red Blue Chair. Instead, we let the natural wood show with a few applications of Tung Oil. Rietveld also used stains and other finishes as well in variations of this chair.
